Trip 1 Details

Saturday: Arrive at the airport where you'll be picked up and transported to the beach cabanas. Depending on when everyone gets in, we'll plan to meet (time based on last flight arrival) prior to dinner. At dinner, the staff will discuss the upcoming week in a brief overview. Afterwards, we'll return to the cabanas for a relaxing night's sleep.

Sunday: For scuba divers on the trip, we will arrange several dives with our local dive shop (additional charge). The diving at Roatan is spectacular, the island rests on the second largest reef in the world. For our non-divers, we'll head off for a sea kayak snorkel safari along the west end of Roatan. After dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, we'll stroll back to the cabanas. For those wanting to enjoy a little nightlife, all you have to do is walk next door to the famous Fosters Bar.

Monday: After breakfast at Pura Vida, everyone will have the opportunity to either relax, go to Coxen Hole for gift shopping, or do some snorkeling in Half-Moon bay. We'll plan to meet for lunch at one of the several restaurants along the beach. Next, we'll all head off to the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences. After receiving special instruction, we'll swim with the dolphins that inhabit the area. The Institute videotapes your encounter with the dolphins and you can purchase a copy of the tape afterwards. After dinner we will fly to La Ceiba where we'll check into the Lodge at Pico Bonito.

Tuesday: We'll meet for breakfast at the Lodge restaurant, time to be decided the previous night. After breakfast, we'll meet with the rest of the staff who will have our boats and equipment ready for outfitting. Once the boats are rigged, we'll enjoy a fun filled day along the Rio Cangrejal, our "local run." After a delicious lunch, we'll paddle a bit more and take a side excursion into the rain forest. At the end of the day, we'll return to the Lodge, giving everyone a chance to clean up and pre-pack for the four-day expedition to the Rio Sico. Dinner will be at the Lodge that evening so that everyone can get an early night's sleep.

Wednesday: We need to be on the road by 6:00 am because of the long drive to the put-in (6 hours). We'll have breakfast along the way, most likely in a town called Sava. Once we arrive at the put-in (noon if all goes well), we'll set up lunch and the staff will begin to rig the support rafts with all of the equipment. The first day on the river is short but it feels good to get in the boats after the long drive. We'll arrive at the first camp with just enough (hopefully!) daylight to get settled in. The staff will prepare a delicious meal while you relax, eat appetizers, and enjoy yourself. Our staff will do all the cooking and cleaning, leaving you plenty of time to relax or explore.

Thursday: Generally, you'll be awakened by either the sounds of the birds chirping or the smell of coffee brewing. After enjoying a hearty breakfast we'll break camp, re-rig and shove off for another adventurous day. Orchid Chasm, Table Breaker, and Cayman Canyon are just a few rapids and sections that we'll encounter this day.

Friday: Today is much like Thursday with more rapids including Fruit of the Loom and Toucan Falls. An interesting addition to the day will be several Pech Indian villages that we'll encounter along the river. These native people are fun loving and curious and generally come running down to the river asking for rides on the rafts. Who can resist?

Saturday: This is your final day on the Rio Sico. We'll encounter several more rapids before reaching the take-out by lunchtime. We'll meet our vehicles, load up, and make our way back to La Ceiba. Generally speaking, we return to the Lodge no later than 5:00 pm. Everyone will have the opportunity to shower and clean up before we meet for dinner at the Lodge.

Sunday: In the morning, we'll assist you in getting to the airport for your return flight back to the States.

Friday - Saturday: We will be paddling local rivers in the La Ceiba area. The rivers will be selected based on water conditions and the skill level of the group. Regardless of which ones we choose, you'll be in for a exceptional jungle white water paddling experience! We'll return to the lodge each evening.

Sunday: In the morning, we'll assist you in getting to the airport for your return flight back to the States.
